Smoked Sausage & Cabbage in a Skillet

This easy Smoked Sausage & Cabbage recipe is low carb, flavorful, and family-friendly. It’s one of those simple one-skillet meals that come together so quickly. It is naturally gluten-free, sugar-free, and low-carb, and it tastes fantastic.

Note: If you are gluten-free, check the nutritional information and ingredient list on the exact ingredients you use in your kitchen. Varying brands may add gluten to their products, or if there is a high sensitivity, make sure to look for brands made in a gluten-free facility.

Is Smoked Sausage Ok on Keto?

Sausage is made from chicken, pork, beef, turkey, or a combination; therefore, it is perfect for the keto diet.

Is cabbage a low carb good?

Absolutely! At only 2.31 net carbs per cup of shredded cabbage, it is a low-carb food recommended vegetable for the keto diet.

Ingredients:

  • Smoked Sausage – The protein of choice in this recipe is smoked sausage. I used a nitrate-free beef sausage. You can use different kinds of smoked sausage such as chicken sausage, kielbasa, andouille sausage, polish sausage, or turkey sausage.
  • Butter – Adds fat and flavor to the recipe.
  • Diced onion & minced garlic – Onions add rich flavor, and garlic infuses depth and aroma to the dish.
  • Fresh cabbage pairs nicely with many different proteins, especially smoked sausage.
  • Sugar-Free BBQ sauce – I have linked my homemade low-carb friendly bbq sauce in the text below.
  • Water – Used as the liquid to steam the cabbage.

Step 4: Add the smoked sausage back to the skillet of fried cabbage. Finally, add the secret ingredient to making the flavor pop, homemade sugar-free bbq sauce.

Tip: If you don’t want to make the keto bbq sauce homemade, you can use a store-bought variety without added sugar. The homemade sauce has a greater depth of flavor.

Variations to this Recipe:

  • Vary the protein – You can use different kinds of smoked sausage such as chicken sausage, kielbasa, andouille sausage, polish sausage, or turkey sausage.
  • Variety of Veggies – Add other low-carb vegetables to the cabbage, such as chopped bell pepper, mushrooms, a few chopped cherry tomatoes, and/or celery.
  • Add broth for more flavor – Instead of water, add chicken broth (veggie broth would work as well) for a greater depth of flavor to the cabbage.
  • Convenience makes it easy – Use a bag of prechopped cabbage instead of fresh cabbage.

Pretty good. I brought sugar free bbq sauce from Walmart. Added my seasoning of choice and left out the added water. My 11yr old liked it as well so it’s a go for us.. will definitely be adding this to the menu.
    Thanks!

    1. Since this is a one-dish meal, we usually just have a really good salad. However, if you are wanting an additional side, maybe green beans or broccoli. Hope you enjoy.

OH. EM. GEE. I pinned this one a while back, but never got around to making it. That is, until tonight. I am SO impressed with how delicious these simple flavors are together. It’s a little labor intensive with all of the chopping but it could definitely be done ahead of time. I used the G Hughes Sugar-free BBQ sauce- it’s perfect!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the dish. If you don’t want to chop cabbage, you can purchase it pre-chopped in a bag.

I made the Smoked Sausage and Cabbage for dinner and it was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I topped it with some brown rice. YUMMY! Yes the Bar-B-Que sauce really did give this dish a Kick. I used G Hughes Bar-B-Que sauce(sugar-free) and Dickey’s smoked sausage. You can find both at Wal-Mart.

I made this tonight with just a few changes. I removed the sugar free BBQ sauce and added 1 can of Rotel and 4 slices of bacon crumbled into it. Man was it good!!

  5. Loved it! Ended up using some celery because I did not have the whole head of cabbage. Also added some crushed pepper for a little more heat. Thanks for the recipe!

This is was, pretty good, maybe will make again. However, that last 1/3 c of water was too much and left a lake in the skillet. Thank-you for the recipe!
