In the late 1940s, no one thought that canning pinto beans were possible. Enter Alfred Spencer who was up for the challenge in Seagrove, North Carolina. He bought a bag of pintos at a wholesale grocery store. After soaking them and cooking them, he canned them as a new product for Mountain View Canning Company. The brand name was later changed to Luck’s because it was easier to say than Alfred Spencer. Its branding started out much like it is today in a yellow can with bright blue letters.
The beans weren’t initially a hit. However, after Tommy Floyd and the Blue Ridge Buddies, a local country band celebrity, started advertising for him on syndicated television stations it launched the brand. As the economy changed and the demand for items of convenience began to grow, so did the brand. As a result, the product line expanded to include other items that most of us are familiar with today including Chili beans, Black beans, Great Northern Beans, Black Eyed Peas, Kidney Beans, Mixed Beans, Fried Apples, Chicken and Dumplings, etc
Over the years, Luck’s has changed hands several times. Today, it is owned by Arizona Canning Company, who kept the original pinto beans recipe the same as when they first began; pinto beans, water, pork fatback, and salt. I just love learning about the small beginnings of a business. I think it’s so cool how so many large companies that I see today had such a humble beginning.
