DIY Brown Sugar Face & Body Scrubs

Spring is upon us and it’s time to scrub the dry, flaky patches of wintertime skin away for good – with a DIY Sugar Scrub!  I rarely splurge on body scrubs, because my FAVORITE way to exfoliate is already sitting in my kitchen cabinet. Today I’ll tell you a few recipes for sugar scrubs that really work – and take very little effort to make or use.

Brown sugar is a little softer and gentler than white sugar, so I use brown sugar for my face.  I reserve the grainier white sugar for that SERIOUS scrubbing, like when I’m trying to make my knees resemble normal knees again, instead of Galapagos Tortoise knees.

MOST Basic Sugar Scrub:

Making a homemade sugar scrub can be as simple as grabbing a measuring cup full and taking it into the shower with you. Wait until your skin is nice and wet, and then slather on the sugar.

Use gentle circular motions to get that dead skin away – I also love to use scrubby bath gloves so I don’t end up rubbing all the skin off my palms in the process. If you’re working on your face, scrub extra gently so you don’t end up scratched or red and raw.

One of my favorite sugar scrub recipes uses my leftover coffee grounds from the morning.  The caffeine left in the coffee grounds is a powerful anti-inflammatory – it reduces redness and puffiness almost as well as asprin. Who knew!

Sugar Scrub with Coffee Grounds & Olive Oil:

  • 1 Tbsp Leftover coffee grounds
  • 2 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • A drizzle of olive oil

Directions:

Use your fingertips to mix the three ingredients in a small bowl until it makes a thick paste and rub in circles gently onto your skin. The sugar and coffee grounds will exfoliate and the caffeine in the coffee will help reduce redness and puffiness. Rinse off the paste with warm water and pat dry – the olive oil leaves your skin feeling soft as a baby’s behind and a little dewy. (NOT overly oily – I promise!)

Interesting Fact: Incorporating used coffee grounds into your soil enriches it. So throw the rest in your garden! I’ve always put coffee grounds in any potted plants I have growing around the house. My momma taught me well 🙂

You can make a more luxurious spa scrub by adding a few more kitchen ingredients to the mix. Here’s a nice basic recipe:

Spa Sugar Scrub:

  • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon of Honey
  • A drizzle of olive oil
  • 1/8 Tsp Lemon Juice

This recipe not only leaves your skin soft (from the honey and oil) but smells great too!

If you’re looking for a frugal Mother’s Day gift to give a friend – this would make a great pampering present in a mason jar with a ribbon around it!
