I think everyone in the world can agree that life can be tough whenever you are struck with a financial burden. It happens to the best of us and unfortunately, it can be hard to recover from. One of our biggest financial struggles happened within a five-year span. My husband, who was in the pharma and medical sales industry, was laid off three times during that span. To make matters worse, we were actually building houses on the side and ended up getting stuck with two that did not sell. Not only did they not sell, but they didn’t sell for TWO YEARS! Of course, all of this was happening at the same time.
Think about it—having 3 mortgages and no job = a ton of financial stress that I never want to relive again. I used to think that this kind of stuff didn’t happen to “people like us.” I was wrong. Pre-layoffs and house-not-selling, we were out of debt, except our mortgage and even had a nice emergency fund. However, after 3 layoffs in 5 years, we used up our savings and were barely getting by. In fact, it was during that season when couponing became a necessity and I started this blog. My way of describing this period in our lives is that it was a very difficult season.
FINALLY, we are out of that season and onto a new one. My husband has a good job and our focus is to be debt free, except our mortgage. And to put things simply, those 5 years left a lasting impression, one that has taught us to be prepared for anything.
Apparently, we’re not alone in this financial journey of stress. According to SunTrust, 70% of Americans are financially stressed. We have been there and know what it’s like to be stressed out financially. My husband and I both have come to the conclusion that no one should feel like we did and everyone should be able to feel financially confident.
I also believe that talking about money shouldn’t be taboo, which is why I’m starting the conversation about onUp from SunTrust. SunTrust wants to take the worry and frustration out of finances, which is why they have created onUp.
