When you have four kids, traveling might seem a bit out of reach. However, we have been married for over 22 years, and it’s so important for us to spend time alone together. My husband and I recently had the opportunity to get away for the weekend to Sandy Springs, GA. It was right before Christmas and to say we were excited was an understatement.
I thought I knew a little bit about the area, but Sandy Springs, GA has a lot more in store for the average person than I remembered. I grew up in Georgia, but being away for 26 years sure made me miss the area. Sandy Springs might be close to the “big” attractions and restaurants in Atlanta, but it has its own small town feel.
You know, the feeling you get when you go home? Sandy Springs is all of that and more! It has everything including restaurants, shops, experiences, and an incredible new performing arts center. Let me show you what a weekend in Sandy Springs feels like; I think you’ll fall in love, just like we did.
Sandy Springs, GA: Date Weekend Getaway
As you know, when you have four kids, it’s quite the chore to pack, but this trip to Sandy Springs, GA was worth it. After we got all the kids settled, we packed our bags and headed out to our weekend destination. If you don’t know much about Sandy Springs, it’s only a few minutes from downtown Atlanta, but the area is surrounded by over 950 acres of parks and natural areas, which gives it a small town feel. It’s great because you can get the excitement of a big city, but also the warm hospitality of Sandy Springs.
It only took us around 2 hours to arrive in Sandy Springs, GA. We couldn’t wait to get to our home away from home for the weekend. While I’m picky about hotels, I knew The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North was not going to disappoint. The Westin had been recently renovated and is located conveniently to Atlanta without having to drive downtown.
We enjoyed one of the Club lounge access 1 bedroom larger suites with a king bed. Although my husband and I typically stay in regular hotel rooms with king beds, after enjoying this suite for the weekend, we will definitely be exploring this option for future getaways.
The expansive suite made relaxing on the couch together so comfy. It was perfectly appointed and very clean, which is most important to me. Although we prefer not to work when we are away together, we both had deadlines approaching so we had to work one evening.
It was much more convenient having a living room to sprawl out. There was a bar as well as a coffee pot with Starbucks coffee, tea, creamer, and sweeteners.
I am not one who usually sleeps well when I’m in an unfamiliar place, but Westin’s iconic Heavenly® Bed lives up to its name. I also enjoyed the lavender oils, which were a very unexpected bonus. Being able to feel right at home helped me feel well rested for when it was time to return to our awesome hectic lifestyle at home.
One of the best things about The Westin is that they pay attention to every detail. Cleanliness is so important to me, and this hotel was spotless. Every towel was folded neatly in its rightful spot, and you had to fall in love with the matching comfy robes.
Brooklyn Cafe was so good and a local favorite. For my meal, I got the beef short ribs while my husband ordered steak. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the short ribs were just as amazing. I don’t often indulge in desserts, but I’m glad I indulged in The Key Lime Pie. It was indeed the very best.
This place is super popular in Sandy Springs, GA, so I was glad that we had reservations early. By the time we left at 7:30 PM, Brooklyn Cafe was packed, and it’s easy to see why. The service was incredible, and the owner even took the time to stop by our table. Of course, our waitress did a great job. Her name is Tweetie, and she made our night extra special.
Brooklyn Cafe is very close to the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center at City Springs. In fact, if it wouldn’t have been raining, we could have walked right over to our next adventure, which was to see Elf The Musical.
City Springs and the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center bring Sandy Springs to life. Some would refer to this location as a 21st-century town square. It has beautiful architecture and is especially stunning at night. I love that the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center provides residents and visitors with diverse arts, entertainment, educational, business, and civic opportunities.
Most cities dream of creating the atmosphere and experience that Sandy Springs has been able to accomplish. City Springs also has an area called City Green. This is a four-acre park that allows people to come rest, read a book or even people watch. I love the outdoor swings. Each set of swings had a ceiling fan above for the warmer weather, and they all faced the stage. The well-built picnic tables are perfect for gatherings. If you need to, you can also access free WiFi at City Green.
We had the chance to watch Elf The Musical at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center. We were impressed that the main character, who played Elf, was also in the movie The Greatest Showman. The best part is that he acted just like the main character in Elf, the movie. I usually have a hard time sitting through shows, but the musical was hilarious, fun, and entertaining.
As parents, you know that you need some time to relax. Relaxing for me is usually taking a very long shower in the evening after my hubby comes home from work, but I don’t often get to pamper myself. My husband and I had the opportunity to get a couples massage at Healing Touch Iyashi.
This was the ultimate way to relax. It was the BEST MASSAGE! Oh my stars, we even went back the same evening, and we were going to get foot massages, but they were booked. We considered driving down this past weekend for an encore. NOT EXAGGERATING! So, if you’re in the area, check out Healing Touch Iyashi.
In the past, when we traveled to Dallas, TX, we have visited Uncle Julio’s Restaurant. You can imagine our excitement of being able to eat here on our weekend getaway to Sandy Springs, GA. It’s already one of our favorite restaurants, and this location did not disappoint. We also ate at several other local restaurants, but this was a fun familiar one. If you get the chance, check out Uncle Julio’s!
What girl doesn’t love to shop? Luckily, there is lots of shopping available in Sandy Springs, GA and it’s close to other nearby malls, shopping centers, and local boutiques. We shopped at Lenox Square Mall, which is conveniently located along with some other fun shops too. You will also find Perimeter Mall close by, which will also allow you to get even more shopping in, without going too far. If you are a Rae Dunn fan, Sandy Springs, GA had a ton of it. I do feel as though we shopped until we dropped that day.
Another memorable meal of ours was Kaiser’s Chophouse. This restaurant was excellent too. We especially loved the thin ribeye steaks. I loved how well put together the salad was, and the mashed potatoes were so rich and creamy! This is the type of food my husband and I could eat every day if we could get away with it. This is another popular restaurant that was hopping with business as well. You can always tell when a restaurant will be good by the size of the crowd it attracts.
This cute eclectic restaurant, also known as the Flying Biscuit, was bustling with people and delicious. The blueberry pancakes were out of this world. I’m not going to lie; they were the first real pancakes I had eaten in well over a year, so you know I savored them and enjoyed every-single-bite. You can tell that locals love this restaurant, but you may be able to stop by The Flying Biscuit Cafe in other parts of the USA. You won’t regret it!
We ended our weekend getaway to Sandy Springs, GA at Mastermind Escape Games. As much as I’d like to say we won this next part, we didn’t. WE LOVED IT THOUGH. Mastermind Escape Games is the place you go when you want to have fun. It was such a fun new adventure for us; I’m sure it would be great for a group of fun couples as well. In fact, they usually see groups of 10-12 instead of just 2, which would make escaping much more manageable.
We had planned to visit Zambawango in Sandy Springs, GA on our way home on Sunday but didn’t realize they were closed that day. I received this package in the mail a couple of days later of their delicious low carb and keto friendly treats. Perfect for those eating keto/low carb like us. As you can see from the picture, these treats tasted AMAZING!
PLEASE visit Sandy Springs, GA if you have the chance. We had so much fun! I am just able to show you a small portion of Sandy Springs, but the town has so much to offer. Make sure to check out many other attractions, shopping, restaurants, and more here to plan a trip.
