Making Chaffles for Sandwiches

I don’t know about you, but sandwiches are always a fantastic option for a quick lunch. When chaffles suddenly went viral, I had been eating low-carb for a while and missed sandwiches. I tried making many different keto-friendly breads, and most were tasteless! Have you tried cloud bread? Oh my word, it’s like eating styrofoam!

I was excited to try chaffles, so I started experimenting with making different sandwiches. I was surprised that they were so delicious, and the possibilities were endless.

Regular Waffle Maker vs a Mini Maker

As soon as I saw people making chaffles all over the internet, I ran out and bought a Dash Waffle Maker. Since the grates are smaller and closer together, the mini-makers make the best chaffles!

I found mine at TJMaxx a few years ago, but now you can find them everywhere! Amazon offers many different options, or you can look at stores like Walmart, Target, or HomeGoods online and in-store.

You can still make chaffles with a regular or Belgian waffle maker, but the texture will be a bit different, and overall, they will be softer.

How to Make Chaffle Sandwiches

There are tons of different options for all kinds of sandwiches. I’m sharing all of my favorites with you below. I can’t tell you how happy I was to make a keto-friendly Hot Ham and Cheese and a PB&J sandwich!

All of the sandwiches below start with my basic chaffle recipe. From there, the possibilities are endless.

Chaffle Grilled Cheese

Grilled cheese sandwiches have always been one of my favorites! Growing up, my mom would make them with tomato soup. You can easily make a delicious low-carb version by following the easy steps below.

  1. Grab your favorite cheese or cheese combination. My favorite is cheddar, while my husband loves Pepperjack. Other options include provolone, Havarti, or Gouda.
  2. Preheat a skillet over medium heat and slather the outer sides of each chaffle with a pat of butter or oil—this extra grease makes the chaffles crispy and browned. Some people use mayo, but I hate mayo, so it’s not happening at my house, but you might like it. Add your cheese, top with the second chaffle, and cook until the cheese melts. You could also make it in the air fryer or oven.

Chaffle Club Sandwich

You can make classic triple-decker club sandwiches in minutes! Pile it high with all your favorite fixings, from ham, turkey, and bacon to melty cheese, crispy lettuce, and juicy tomato.

  1. Layer in your favorite fillings! Sliced deli meat, cheese, bacon crumbles, lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, mayo, etc. Go heavy on the good stuff!
  2. On an open chaffle, layer mustard, lettuce, tomato, protein, bacon, and cheese. Top with a second chaffle and press down gently.
  3. I like to add the meat and cheese, then toast it before adding mustard and lettuce.
  4. Cut the sandwich in halves or quarters. If you are like me, you’ll need toothpicks to secure it, depending on how high you piled it.

Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwich

  1. Grab your deli ham and Swiss or provolone cheese and heat it in the microwave or a skillet until hot and melty.
  2. Add your ham and cheese between two chaffles, then pop it back into the chaffle maker so the cheese melts into the chaffle. You could also put it in the air fryer.

Keto PB & J Sandwich

When I was in school, my favorite lunch was the cafeteria peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They always mixed the peanut butter and jelly first, completely changing the taste. I’ve done the same ever since. If you haven’t tried it like this, you should!

  1. Mix natural peanut butter (I use Smucker’s Crunchy Natural) and sugar-free jelly in equal amounts together.
  2. Spoon it between two chaffles and press together.
  3. If you like yours hot, wrap it in aluminum foil and pop it in the air fryer or oven for a few minutes.
