This recipe comes together fast…no fuss, no weird ingredients, just simple, bold flavor in one pan. With a big family and a busy schedule, I need recipes that are easy and don’t require a lot of effort from me. This pork recipe checks all of those boxes.

If you’re eating low carb, juggling sports practice, kids’ activities, or just trying to make something that everyone will actually eat…this smoked sausage with peppers and onions skillet is your new go-to.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This easy smoked sausage with peppers and onions skillet is ready in minutes with just a handful of simple ingredients:

Smoked sausage – Adds big, bold flavor. I usually go with beef or pork sausage, but you can use turkey sausage if you prefer a lighter option.
Bell peppers – I like to use a colorful mix! Red, yellow, and orange peppers give natural sweetness and make the skillet look beautiful. Green works amazingly, too!
Onion – Sautéed onions add a savory depth that pulls everything together.
Butter or avocado oil – Helps everything caramelize and adds rich flavor. I use butter, but both work great.
Seasonings – A simple mix of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and a pinch of paprika gives this skillet meal tons of flavor without needing complicated spices.
Pro tip: Always check the label of your smoked sausage. Some brands sneak in added sugar or fillers that can bump up the carb count.

How to Make This Smoked Sausage with Peppers and Onions Skillet

This recipe is all about simple steps, big flavor, and minimal dishes. And all the tired moms cheer! Here’s exactly how I make this one pan meal from start to finish:

melted butter sauteing fresh garlic for the smoke sausage with peppers and onions skillet

Step 1: Start with butter and garlic

Place your skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. While that’s melting, go ahead and toss in the minced garlic. I love this step because of the amazing smell from the melting butter and garlic.

Pro Tip: Use a garlic press for easy fresh garlic.

Step 2: Cook the sausage

Slice the smoked sausage and add it to the skillet. Let it cook, stirring occasionally, until it starts to lightly brown and the edges get a little crispy.

Pro Tip: Before slicing the sausage, place it in the freezer for a couple of minutes. This will make it easier to slice!

Step 3: Slice the veggies

While the sausage is cooking, go ahead and slice your onions and peppers lengthwise. This gives you that classic “sausage and peppers” look and makes everything cook evenly.

Pro Tip: Make sure to cut your peppers and onions to the same thickness so they finish cooking at the same time.

Step 4: Remove the sausage

Once it’s browned, remove the sausage from the pan, drain the excess grease, and set it aside for later.

Step 5: Sauté the peppers and onions

Add the sliced peppers and onions to the same skillet and sauté until they start to soften, turn brown, and caramelize.

Step 6: Bring it all together

Add the sausage back to the skillet with the Bragg’s Liquid Aminos. Let it all simmer together so the flavors can blend.

Optional Add-Ons & Easy Swaps

This smoked sausage with peppers and onions skillet is delicious just the way it is…BUT if you want to switch things up a bit, here are a few ideas:

  • Add cheese – Sprinkle in some shredded mozzarella or Gruyère at the end and let it melt for a gooey finish.
  • Toss in extra veggies – Mushrooms, zucchini, or a handful of spinach work great if you want to sneak in a few extra veggies.
  • Serve it over cauliflower rice – Makes it feel more like a full meal and soaks up all that flavor.
  • Spice it up – A bit of crushed red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce gives it a nice kick.
  • Drizzle with sugar-free BBQ sauce – For a smoky-sweet twist that pairs really well with the sausage. Try my homemade BBQ sauce with this dish.

Smoked Sausage and Peppers Skillet FAQs

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes! This dish reheats really well. Just store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. It’s great for meal prep or quick lunches.

Is this recipe keto and low-carb friendly?

It is! Just double-check your sausage label. Some brands include added sugar or fillers. Look for one with 1g net carbs or less per serving to keep it keto-friendly.

Can I use frozen peppers and onions?

You can! Just know they’ll release more liquid, so you may need to cook them a little bit longer to get that nice sautéed texture. Fresh is ideal, but frozen works in a pinch.

What can I serve with this?

It’s great on its own, but you can serve it over cauliflower rice, with southern-style green beans, or even a simple garden salad.

Can I freeze the leftovers?

Yes. This dish freezes surprisingly well. Let it cool completely, then store it in a freezer-safe container or zippered storage bag for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight and reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.

Having a large family, leftovers are gold! We love meals that have leftovers because it makes the next day’s lunch or dinner so much easier. This smoked sausage with peppers and onions skillet is one of those meals that tastes just as good the next day—maybe even better.

To store:

Let everything cool completely. Store the leftovers in an airtight container or zippered storage bag. Pop it in the fridge and use it within 4 days.

To reheat:

You’ve got options.

  • Stovetop: Add a splash of water or broth and warm it over medium-low heat until hot.
  • Microwave: Cover loosely and reheat at 70% power in short bursts so you don’t overcook the sausage or veggies.

To freeze:

Once cool, store it in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag. Don’t forget to label it (unless you enjoy mystery meals 😅). It’ll keep for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Pro Tip: Freeze it in individual portions for easy low-carb lunches you can grab and go.

  1. What about the seasonings that your description mentions? I only see pepper but nowhere you say where to put it.

    1. 5 stars
I mixed the pepper with the Soy Sauce (Brags Aminos).
I sauteed the peppers, onions and sausage in the pan with the garlic but I was thinking about air frying the sausage, peppers, and onions in the air fryer.

  2. Okay, we enjoyed this! A few questions though. If we made it in the oven or air fryer, would we still brown the sausage and sauté in the garlic and butter? You don’t mention any specific directions for that so I’m not sure what to do before putting it on the sheet pan.

  3. I fixed this for the first time for my husband, since he’s on keto. I ate it too. It was very delicious! He said I will have to fix it again, but double the recipe. Lol

    1. This is one of my hubs absolute faves! If your husband enjoyed this one check out my Smoked Sausage with pickles and cheese appetizer. It is delicious! Glad you all enjoyed this recipe!!

  4. If I choose the oven option – do I need to saute the veggies or just put everything in the pan and roast?

    1. It depends how you like your veggies. If you like them very tender and more well done then you would need to cook the veggies in the oven just a little longer.
