Have you ever had a sandwich without the bread? This Hot “Unwich” Ham and Cheese Casserole is going to become a new favorite that is ideal for those on the keto or low carb diet. It’s delicious, easy, and fast to make!
Hot “Unwich” Ham and Cheese Casserole
Although I typically plan our meals so that we have leftovers and I often make soup to help take care of our lunches throughout the week there are times I need a quick meal or snack solution. Earlier this week, I had seen one of those recipe videos on Facebook for a sub-type sandwich made with crescent rolls cooked on a big sheet pan. It immediately got my attention because I knew I could tweak it to make it keto/low-carb friendly by getting rid of the bread and turning it into an “unwich.” Although it is easy to grab deli meat and cheese for a quick snack, I like to change it up so that I don’t get bored.
Sometimes I make Hot Ham & Cheese Rollups and now I have a new option. Even though the pictures do not do it justice, Hot Ham & Cheese “Unwich” Casserole is delicious. It reminded me so much of my favorite sub without all the bread.
How to make the Hot Ham and Cheese Casserole “Unwich” Recipe
I prepared it in a 9X9 pan, just in case we didn’t love it, but we devoured all but one piece. You can change this up to best suit your tastes by switching up the deli meat, cheese, and toppings. It would also be fabulous served on top of a bed of lettuce. I threw everything together so there won’t be exact measurements or macros as the nutritional info will depend on what and how much of the ingredients you use.
What I used:
- Approx 1/2 lb Smoked Deli Ham
- 8 Slices of Swiss Cheese
- Dill Pickle Chips
- Italian Dressing
- Italian Seasoning
Directions for making the hot ham and cheese casserole
Below you’ll find my step by step process. As mentioned, you can adjust this to suit your preferences on lunchmeat and cheeses or toppings. You could even add sliced avocado on top when it comes out of the oven!
First, layer the deli ham in the bottom of a 9 X 9 pan.
Next, layer swiss cheese on top of the ham.
I added dill pickles, a little Italian dressing, and then sprinkled Italian seasoning on top before adding the second layer of ham. Finally, top with another layer of swiss cheese and the rest of the Italian seasoning.
Pop the Hot Ham & Cheese “Unwich” Casserole in a 375-degree oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and all the ingredients are cooked through. This was just as delicious warmed up the next day. I wish I would have made a bigger casserole so I would have had more than one serving left over.
