What are Chaffles?

Basically, you start with egg and cheese in a small bowl to make cheese waffles. Since chaffles went viral online, the original recipe has expanded beyond shredded cheese and eggs to include ingredients such as coconut flour (or almond flour), baking powder, sweetener of choice, and a host of other ingredients such as blueberries.

Ingredients For Mouthwatering Blueberry Chaffles:

  • Egg: Helps hold the chaffle batter together when cooked
  • Mozzarella cheese: Gives that good savory flavor and moisture for a soft, cheesy interior
  • Blueberries: Adds bits of sweet berry flavor throughout the chaffle
  • Cream cheese: Gives a richness to the baked chaffle
  • Coconut flour: Absorbs moisture and makes sure the chaffle gets nice and crispy
  • Baking powder: Makes the chaffles light and fluffy when cooked
  • Vanilla extract: Provides sweetness and gives overall flavor
  • Liquid sweetener: Gives sweetness to balance out the savory cheese
  • Cinnamon: Adds some warm flavor to the chaffles

Cooking Tips for Best Blueberry Chaffles

  • Use room temperature ingredients: Take eggs, cream cheese, and mozzarella out of the fridge 30 minutes before starting so they can be incorporated more easily into the batter.
  • Mix batter very well: To uneven texture, vigorously whisk or beat ingredients for at least 60 seconds for a smooth, lump-free consistency.
  • Don’t overfill the waffle iron: Put just enough batter to cover the bottom plate with a thin, even layer. Overfilling can cause them to overflow or take too long to cook.
  • Use cooking spray liberally: Give the hot plates a heavy coating before each batch, or the chaffles may stick. Brush on more oil if needed between batches.
  • Resist peeking while cooking: It’s so tempting, but don’t lift the lid, or you’ll let heat escape! Opening too soon may prevent crispiness.
  • Allow excess batter to drip off: Before removing, carefully tilt the cooked chaffle to let the uncooked batter run off for cleaner results.
  • Work quickly removing chaffles: Have a heat-safe spatula ready. Remove finished chaffles promptly to prevent overbrowning edges while making the next batch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Chaffles Taste Like Eggs?

It is hard to make a blanket statement when there are so many differences in opinions and variations of the traditional chaffle recipe. If you are particularly sensitive to the taste of eggs, the sweetness of this chaffle may offset the taste.

Can You Eat Blueberries on Keto?

Many fruits are too high in carbs for a keto diet; however, berries are low in carbs and high in fiber. One-fourth of a cup of blueberries is 21 calories and approximately 4.3 net carbs so that you can eat blueberries on a low-carb diet in moderation.

What are the best berries for chaffles?

While I tested this recipe with fresh blueberries, frozen should work fine if you have those on hand instead.

What Sweetener Did You Use in this Blueberry Chaffle Recipe?

The longer I have eaten keto, the less sweetener it takes to satisfy me. For this recipe, I used two squirts of Pyure Liquid Sweetener. When you add either sugar-free maple syrup, whipped cream, or keto-friendly ice cream to eat with blueberry chaffles, you don’t need as much sweetener.

If you don’t have a liquid sweetener, you can substitute 3/4 tsp of any other sweetener, such as Lakanto Monkfruit or Swerve.

What kitchen appliance do I need to make Blueberry Chaffles?

Dash mini waffle might be the most popular small kitchen appliance on the planet right now. This mini waffle iron makes perfect 4-inch waffles and is affordable and convenient. While you can use a regular waffle maker, almost all keto chaffle recipes you see online are for the Dash Mini Waffle maker, making one 4-inch chaffle at a time. If you don’t want to wait for the Dash Waffle Maker, check out the best mini waffle makers for chaffles.

Dash White Mini Chaffle Maker

Most recipes you find for Chaffles, whether sweet or savory, make two four-inch chaffles.

Burgess Brothers chaffle maker

This waffle maker may be a better choice if you have a big family like me. For convenience’s sake, you can make four 3-inch chaffles at once.

Where Can I buy the Dash Mini Waffle Maker?

Amazon has several different Dash mini waffle makers available in various colors. Of course, you could look for one in stores such as TJMaxx, Kohl’s, Target, or Walmart, but I’ve read that many are sold out.

Can I Use a Regular Waffle Maker?

Sure! You will likely need to adjust the amount of batter you use and the cooking time. Chaffles made on the Dash Mini Maker are usually golden brown in four minutes, but I have read that regular waffle makers can take longer.

How to Serve Keto Blueberry Chaffles?

There are several different ways to serve Keto Blueberry Chaffles. My personal favorite is with a scoop of sugar-free, low-carb vanilla ice cream. I also tested this recipe as a traditional blueberry keto waffle with sugar-free syrup and sugar-free whipped topping and a side of sausage. All three were delicious.

Storage and Reheating Instructions

  • Storing Blueberry Chaffles: Allow chaffles to cool completely after cooking, about 10 minutes. Place chaffles in a sealable container or zip-top bag and store them in the fridge for 3-5 days. To freeze, wrap airtight and keep in freezer for 2-3 months.
  • Reheating Chaffles: Preheat oven to 300°F. Place chaffles on a small baking sheet and warm for 8-10 minutes. Heat frozen or refrigerated chaffles in a toaster oven for 2-3 minutes until hot and crispy.

Recipe Variations and Substitutions:

  • Lemon Blueberry Chaffles: Add a fun tang with one teaspoon of fresh lemon zest and one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice to the batter.
  • Cream Cheese Glaze: Whip 2 tablespoons of room-temperature cream cheese with 2 tablespoons of powdered erythritol or monkfruit sweetener for a sweet topping. Drizzle over warm cooked chaffles for a cream cheese glaze.
  • Mixed Berry Chaffles: Fold a berry medley into the batter – try raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries for triple-berry chaffles!
  • Skillet Method: Don’t have a waffle iron? Make chaffles in a greased skillet over medium heat. Flip halfway through cooking until both sides are crispy.

Can’t wait to try these but I want to let you know the Lakanto syrup (which I also use) has changed their recipe (from what one of the admins on a fb group I belong to says) and its no longer keto friendly. I don’t know what changed but the one I have has vegetable fiber, vegetable glycerin and cellulose gum. Not sure if these are the changes or not but they don’t seem to be keto friendly anyway.

  2. I just don’t seem to get these waffles right. I have a taste that is off a bit. Not sure what it is.

    1. I think you just have to realize that these kinds of things taste different from their high carb counterparts. Once you can learn to appreciate them for what they are, it makes it better!

  3. Having a hard time finding this one on the MyFitnessPal app. When I add the recipe, the calories don’t match yours. I have been able to find some of your other chaffles on there, is this one under a different name?

    1. Hi Denice, I doubt all my recipes are in MyFitnessPal. I don’t personally add them as I don’t use the app and I provide the information in the recipe card. Other app users are who contribute that information. I tried a few in the beginning but it is just too much extra work and there are so many different apps people use.

Made these this morning. I followed the recipe exactly except that I doubled it
They are absolutely delicious. I’ve struggled with Chaffles in the past. No more I’m on board with all your recipes

    1. Yes, you can almond flour but you would need more than coconut flour. I would use 1 TB almond flour.

My husband and I love this recipe. I multiplied the ingredients x 4 so we each have one more breakfast. I didn’t measure the blueberries. I put 7 blueberries on top of each Chaffle before cooking it. I used ~3 Tablespoons of batter per Chaffle. Thank you Kasey for a great recipe!

I made these this morning using 1 Tbsp. almond flour and 1 tsp. powdered Swerve. Topped them with sugar free blueberry syrup and a bit of whipped cream – absolutely delicious! I’ll be adding this recipe into rotation for breakfast often.

  7. These were good! Added 1Tbsp of coconut flour though. Originally they seemed too “cheesy” & thin. Definitely kept me on track when craving BB-pancakes! ❤

    1. So happy you enjoyed it! Sometimes it’s hard to find a low-carb keto friendly option when a craving hits. Super glad this one helped.

  8. I’m confused, does one recipe make 2 chaffles? Is 1 serving 1 chaffle or 2? Thank you, I’m anxious to try this recipe.
