We had dinner at someone’s house years ago. She made a dish that had green beans wrapped in bacon with a brown sugar glaze. We loved it! The problem. It was loaded with carbs. So, I decided to experiment until I perfected this recipe.

I’ve served this recipe at holidays, potlucks, and weeknight dinners. It’s always a hit! It’s so good that no one even realizes it’s keto-friendly! If you love savory, Southern-style green beans with a touch of smoky, caramelized flavor then this recipe is about to become a new favorite.

  •  Easy to Make – Just mix, bake, and enjoy!

What You’ll Need to Make Crack Green Beans

Like all of my recipes at kaseytrenum.com, this recipe comes together with simple pantry items and a few fresh ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

Main Ingredients:

Green Beans – You can use fresh, frozen, or canned. If using fresh, blanch them first for the best texture.
Bacon – Adds smoky, crispy goodness to every bite. Use thick-cut for extra crunch!
Unsalted Butter – Creates a rich, buttery base for the sauce.

The Flavor Boosters:

Bacon Grease – A little extra bacon flavor makes all the difference!
Lakanto Brown Sugar (or any sugar-free brown sugar substitute) – Adds a touch of caramelized sweetness.
Bragg’s Aminos (or Soy Sauce) – Enhances the umami depth of the dish.
Minced Garlic – Because garlic makes everything better! At least that is what my husband says.
Onion Powder – Complements the savory, smoky flavors.
Black Pepper & Salt – Balances and enhances every bite.
Worcestershire Sauce – Adds a subtle tangy-sweet depth.
Red Pepper Flakes (Optional) – A pinch adds just the right amount of heat.
Tip: Want to make it even richer? Swap half the butter for ghee to intensify the buttery flavor! My family loves to spice most dishes up. So, I’ll add in a bit of red pepper flakes. The heat with the smoky sweetness. Oh my!!

How to Make Crack Green Beans (Step-by-Step Guide)

This recipe is super simple, and everything comes together in just a few steps!

Step 1: Preheat & Prep the Bacon

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). While it heats up, cook the bacon until it’s crispy. Either in a microwave, skillet on the stovetop, or on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Once it’s golden and crispy, transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate to soak up the excess grease. Let it cool, then chop into bite-sized pieces.

Tip: Baking your bacon? Set your oven to 400°F and cook for 15-18 minutes for extra-crispy perfection.

Step 2: Prepare the Green Beans & Sauce

For fresh or frozen green beans: Blanch them in boiling water for 3-4 minutes, then drain and pat dry.

For canned green beans: Simply drain and rinse them well to remove excess sodium.

In a small mixing bowl, whisk together:

Pour the mixture evenly over the green beans in a greased 9×13 baking dish and gently toss to coat.

  • Optional: For an extra caramelized finish, broil for 2-3 minutes at the end.The fully baked crack green beans casserole served in a white casserole dish, presented on a white background with a yellow serving cloth for a visually appealing and enticing final dish.

Step 4: Rest & Serve

Remove from the oven and let the crack green beans rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. This helps the sauce thicken slightly and allows the flavors to fully develop.

Recipe Variations & Easy Substitutions

Want to switch things up? Here are some delicious twists on the classic Crack Green Beans with Bacon recipe!

1. Make It Extra Crispy
Broil the dish for 2-3 minutes at the end of baking to get those green beans slightly charred and caramelized.

2. Try Different Cheeses
Adding cheese makes everything better! Sprinkle shredded Parmesan, cheddar, or mozzarella on top before baking for a cheesy, melty twist.

Tip: For a smoky flavor, try smoked gouda or gruyère!

3. Add More Veggies
Want to sneak in more veggies? Try adding:

  • Sliced mushrooms – Adds earthy, umami richness.
  • Chopped bell peppers – Gives your dish a pop of color and sweetness.
  • Diced onions – Boosts the savory depth of the dish.

4. Spice It Up
If you love heat, try adding:

  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper for a little kick.
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika for a warm, smoky heat.
  • Extra red pepper flakes for spicy crack green beans.

5. Swap the Bacon
No bacon? No problem! Try these alternatives:

  • Turkey bacon – A leaner option with a slightly different texture.
  • Smoked sausage – Adds a delicious Southern-style twist.
  • Crispy prosciutto – Ultra-crispy and elevates the dish.

Vegetarian Option: Omit the bacon and use butter or olive oil instead of bacon grease for a rich, flavorful result.

6. Make It Dairy-Free
Swap butter for olive oil or ghee to make this dish dairy-free and paleo-friendly.

How to Store Leftovers

If you have leftovers (which isn’t always the case because this dish is so addictive!), here’s how to store them properly:

  • Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.💡

Tip: Let the green beans cool completely before refrigerating or freezing. This helps maintain their texture and prevents excess moisture buildup.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I make Crack Green Beans ahead of time?

Yes! This dish is perfect for meal prep or holiday cooking. Just add everything to the baking dish up to 24 hours in advance, cover it tightly with foil, and refrigerate. When you’re ready to bake, remove it from the fridge, let it sit at room temperature for 15-20 minutes, and bake as directed.

Tip: Since it’ll be cold, add an extra 5-7 minutes to the baking time.

2. Can I use frozen green beans instead of canned?

Absolutely! Frozen green beans work great, but you’ll need to thaw and drain them well before using. If you want a firmer texture, blanch them in boiling water for 3-4 minutes, then transfer them to an ice bath before baking.

3. How many servings does this recipe make?

This crack green beans recipe serves 10 people, depending on portion size. If you’re serving a crowd, you can double the recipe and bake it in a larger dish!

4. Can I substitute turkey bacon for regular bacon?

Yes, you can use turkey bacon, but keep in mind that it’s leaner and won’t get as crispy as regular bacon. If using turkey bacon, cook it in a little olive oil or butter to enhance the texture and flavor.

5. Can I omit the bacon altogether?

Yes! If you want a vegetarian version, simply omit the bacon and replace the bacon grease with additional butter or olive oil. The dish will still have a rich, savory flavor.

6. Can I use French-style green beans instead of cut green beans?

Yes! French-style green beans have a thinner, more delicate texture, so you may need to reduce the baking time by 5-7 minutes to prevent them from becoming too soft.

    1. Sure. I haven’;t tried that but I am sure it will be fine. Use approximately 45 ounces or 2 3/4 lbs. The cook time will change since they are frozen so just keep an eye on them. Let me know how the frozen beans work and how the dish turns out!!

  1. 5 stars
I cooked this for dinner tonight and it was great! I’ll definitely be cooking this regularly. I wrote the ideas about adding cheese and/or other veggies so that I won’t forget! My daughter and I both loved it. I cooked it with the Chicken Bacon Ranch Casserole. Yum!

  2. How big is a serving size? that seems like a lot of calories if it’s a half cup. and it’s a side dish so you’ll be adding even more carbs to your meal. is it the Brown sugar that’s adding to all the carbs? I know it’s S F. but it still has carbs. what can I eliminate to lower the total carb count?

    1. Hey Jean, I don’t measure the servings out. I divide it evenly by the number of servings instead. The dish has 4 net carbs. If you’re wanting something lower in carbs then you may want to look at my Southern Green Bean recipe. There isn’t really anything you can take out of this recipe and get the same results.
