The highly popular Keto Chaffle recipe is everywhere you look online if you are in any keto or low carb groups. Chaffles went viral virtually overnight, and now there are many variations of this quick and easy recipe on Facebook. This traditional Chaffle recipe is a fantastic alternative to bread and makes perfectly delicious sandwiches.
Easy Keto Chaffles
It seems that overnight, Keto Chaffles popped into the low carb world, and now they are here to stay. With an incredibly easy base recipe, your imagination is the only limit to the number of different recipes you can make. While I did not originally create this recipe, it began to pop up in keto groups everywhere. To make it easier to find, I am posting all the info I have in one place. I’ve been testing many different variations to this recipe but wanted to make sure and post the original chaffle recipe for those looking for a keto-friendly bread that is low in carbs for the ketogenic diet.
What is a chaffle made of?
What in the world is this keto Chaffle recipe that has overtaken the keto world and taken it by storm? Simply put, it is a waffle made of cheese and eggs. Since the original recipe came out, there have been numerous variations all over Facebook groups. It seems as though every person following a keto or low carb diet is making their version of Chaffles.
Why is it called a chaffle?
It’s a waffle made with cheese hence the play on the word waffle starting with a ch instead of a w.
Do chaffles taste like eggs and cheese?
Every recipe isn’t going to make every person happy. While there are many singing the praises of Chaffels and making a new variation of a chaffle daily, there are some that weren’t impressed who said it tasted like cheese eggs or a cheese waffle. However, above and beyond, the feedback is so good that this recipe was an instant sensation overnight.
Does keto chaffles get crispy?
It takes about 4 minutes for each chaffle to get golden brown. At first, they feel soft, but they will crisp once you remove them from the waffle maker. The secret is letting it sit for a few minutes once it is done. The Chaffle will begin to crisp in just a few minutes.
How to serve chaffles?
The standard Chaffle recipe makes a great substitution for keto bread. The possibilities are truly endless. You could use for a hamburger bun, Keto Sloppy Joe bun, hot dog bun, or to make a sandwich. It would also make fantastic breakfast sandwiches as well.
What do I use to make this chaffle recipe?
While a standard waffle iron would work, Dash mini waffle makers are all the rage right now. Since they are very affordable and small to store, it was a no brainer for me to invest in one. Most all chaffle recipes are geared for the size of the Dash mini waffle maker.
The Dash mini waffle maker is the perfect size for the Chaffle recipe. The traditional Chaffle recipe makes two four-inch chaffles using this waffle maker.
If you have a big family or want to make several at once, this waffle maker makes four 3 inch waffles at a time. You would need to use a little less batter, but it would be a huge time saver.
Can you use a regular waffle maker to make Chaffles?
Yes, you can use a Belgium or a regular waffle maker. The surface area of both are larger than the Dash mini maker, so you won’t fill it completely with batter. Keep in mind; the grates are farther apart so it might not be quite as crispy.
Where can I buy the Dash mini waffle maker?
I am a fan of Amazon Prime because I can order from the comfort of my home and have it delivered to my front door in two days. I did happen to find my Dash Mini Waffle Maker at TJMaxx months ago but haven’t seen any since. You can find it at other stores such as Target, Kohls, Belk, Sam’s Club, etc.
The recipe starts with a small bowl, shredded cheese, and an egg. Sounds simple enough, right?
I used a whisk to mix the cheese and egg as the waffle maker heated up. It heated up very quickly.
Tip: I read in a couple of Facebook groups that some people sprinkle a little shredded cheese on the waffle maker before pouring the batter then a little more on top for added crispness.
The biggest mistake I’ve seen in Facebook groups is pouring all the batter at once. If you do that, it will pour out everywhere. This recipe makes two chaffles, so make sure to divide the batter.
It takes about 4 minutes for the chaffle to reach a golden brown color. Once it is done, it should be easy to remove from the waffle maker.
You can also enjoy it as a substitute for toast and enjoy with eggs and bacon. I loved it the most as a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich.
Variations to the Traditional Chaffle Recipe
- Experiment with different kinds of cheese such as Monterrey Jack, Colby, mozzarella cheese, etc. You could even combine two different kinds of cheese for added flavor.
- Add spices such as garlic powder, Italian seasoning, Everything But the Bagel seasoning, or red pepper flakes to turn it up a notch
- I have found they are best when made with just an egg white instead of the entire egg.
- Add a tsp of coconut flour or a tablespoon of almond flour along with 1/4 tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt.
- Thinly chopped peppers, onions, or jalapenos can add flavor and texture.
- Keep it sugar-free by adding keto-friendly sweeteners like Lakanto Monkfruit or Swerve to make a sweet Chaffle.
How do I store chaffles if I make several at once?
You can make several at a time to keep in the fridge, or you can bake extras to freeze. In the fridge, they will stay fresh for 4-5 days. To freeze, you can store them in a freezer safe container or in a zip lock bag. To keep them from sticking together, place parchment paper or wax paper between each one. Follow the reheating instructions below for the best experience for reheating.
How do I reheat?
For the best experience, I prefer to reheat chaffles in the oven, air fryer, skillet, or toaster for the freshest taste. You can reheat in several different ways, such as a toaster, skillet, air fryer, or in the oven. My personal preference is a toaster oven or air fryer. You can also pop them back in the Dash Mini Waffle Maker to heat up and make them crispy again.
How Do I Make Chaffles Crispy?
There are a couple of things you can do to make it crispier. But, they may not be as crispy as a traditional waffle.
- Make sure the waffle maker is thoroughly heated
- Sprinkle a little cheese on the waffle iron before adding batter then a little more on top of the batter.
- Use only egg whites.
- Make sure to cook the chaffle until it is golden brown. Some say that 2-3 minutes is the optimal cooking time. I prefer a cooking time of 3-4 minutes.
- They won’t feel crispy when you initially remove them from the waffle maker but will crisp as they sit.
- Pop them in the toaster oven or a skillet with a bit of butter for added crispness.

Keto is a high fat, moderate protein, and very low carb way of eating so that your body reaches a state of ketosis and burns fat for energy instead of carbs. You aren’t counting calories.

Can i make the batter and cook it in a pan like a pancake, I don’t have a waffle maker yet, and I’m not really sure how much I would use it.
.Kasey says
I don’t know. The dash waffle maker is super cheap. You can find it usually for less than $10. The small grates on the iron really help with the crisp texture.
Molly says
It isn’t the same without a waffle maker. Without you are making an omelette.

I may not have cooked it long enough, but my chaffle was quite good. I used egg whites (I only have them on hand right now) and made some sliced almonds into a “flour” and used Havarti cheese and 1/8 tsp of baking soda. I will make these again, for sure. Oh, and I sprinkled some homemade cinnamon sugar on top.

In the recipe above all it shows is eggs and cheese I don’t see the ingredients for flour baking powder etc.

Hi Vivian. This recipe is the original keto chaffle recipe that calls only for eggs and cheese. In the variation section of the blog post, you will see several different options of add-ins to the traditional chaffle recipe. In that section, you’ll see coconut flour (or almond flour), baking powder, and salt as an option to add to the traditional chaffle recipe.
