Mouthwatering Sweet Blueberry Chaffles
If you love a good waffle for breakfast, like me, these fluffy Blueberry Chaffles are the perfect fun twist on the viral chaffle recipe craze.
What are Chaffles?
When I first started eating keto, chaffles hadn’t yet hit the internet. But after about a year, chaffles were everywhere. I saw so many different types of chaffle recipes (sweet, savory, etc…) that I knew I had to try them. And boy, was I hooked.
I’m a big breakfast girl! I love biscuits, waffles, muffins, pancakes……..all the things! One morning, I was craving blueberry waffles (they are my fave!) and decided to make a low-carb version using chaffles
Basically, you start with egg and cheese in a small bowl to make cheese waffles. Since chaffles went viral online, the original recipe has expanded beyond shredded cheese and eggs to include ingredients such as coconut flour (or almond flour), baking powder, sweetener of choice, and a host of other ingredients such as blueberries, chocolate, chocolate chips, etc.

Ingredients you’ll need for Blueberry
- Egg: Helps hold the chaffle batter together when cooked
- Mozzarella cheese: Gives that good savory flavor and moisture for a soft, cheesy interior
- Blueberries: Adds bits of sweet berry flavor throughout the chaffle
- Cream cheese: Gives a richness to the baked chaffle
- Coconut flour: Absorbs moisture and makes sure the chaffle gets nice and crispy
- Baking powder: Makes the chaffles light and fluffy when cooked
- Vanilla extract: Provides sweetness and gives overall flavor
- Liquid sweetener: The sweetness that balances out the savory cheese
- Cinnamon: Adds more flavor
- Salt: Balances sweetness

Step 1: Preheat Waffle Iron
- It takes just a few minutes to heat. You don’t want to miss this step, as it helps crisp the outside of the waffles. It only takes 2-3 minutes. If you have a Dash Mini Maker, the light on the top will go off when it is preheated.
- Grease plates generously with cooking spray
Step 2: Mix Wet Ingredients
- Crack the egg into a small mixing bowl, add shredded cheese and the rest of the ingredients.
- Whisk ingredients until smooth
Step 3: Pour Chaffle Batter
- Cover the dash mini waffle maker with ½ of the batter and sprinkle a couple of blueberries on top.
- Cook for approximately 3-4 minutes until your chaffle is golden brown.
- Remove the chaffle carefully.
Step 4: Repeat Following Instructions
- Repeat the step above for the remaining batter
- Serve with sugar-free maple syrup, whipped cream, or keto ice cream
Cooking Tips for Best Blueberry Chaffles
- Use room-temperature ingredients: I find it best to take the eggs, cream cheese, and mozzarella out of the fridge about 30 minutes before starting so they mix better into the batter. If you don’t have time, they will still be delish! I rarely remember this.
- Mix batter very well: To prevent uneven texture, vigorously whisk ingredients until they are combined.
- Use cooking spray liberally: Give the hot plates a heavy coating of your favorite cooking spray before each batch, or the chaffles may stick. You can always brush on more oil in between batches.
- Don’t overfill the waffle iron: You want to put just enough batter to cover the bottom plate with a thin, even layer. I’ve done this more times than I can count, and it makes a big mess of batter dripping out everywhere. I don’t recommend it. lol
- Resist peeking while cooking: It’s so tempting, but don’t lift the lid. It not only allows the heat to escape, but if you look too early, the chaffle will totally separate with half stuck to either the top or bottom plate.
- Allow excess batter to drip off: Before removing, carefully tilt the cooked chaffle to let the uncooked batter run off for cleaner results. I always grab a paper towel to catch it before it makes a mess on my waffle maker or counter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Chaffles Taste Like Eggs?
It is hard to make a blanket statement when there are so many differences in opinions and variations of the traditional chaffle recipe. But, if you are particularly sensitive to the taste of eggs, the sweetness of this chaffle may offset the taste.
Can You Eat Blueberries on Keto?
Many fruits are too high in carbohydrates for a keto diet; however, berries are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber. One-fourth of a cup of blueberries has 21 calories and approximately 4.3 net carbs, so you can eat blueberries in moderation on a low-carb diet.
What are the best berries for chaffles?
While I love using fresh blueberries when they’re in season, don’t be afraid to use frozen blueberries if that’s what you have on hand. Just make sure to thaw them first and pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. This will help prevent your chaffles from getting too soggy.
What Sweetener Did You Use in this Blueberry Chaffle Recipe?
The longer I have eaten keto, the less sweetener it takes to satisfy me. For this recipe, I used two squirts of Pyure Liquid Sweetener. When you add either sugar-free maple syrup, whipped cream, or keto-friendly ice cream to eat with blueberry chaffles, you don’t need as much sweetener.
If you don’t have a liquid sweetener, you can substitute 3/4 tsp of any other sweetener, such as Lakanto Monkfruit or Swerve.
What kitchen appliance do I need?
Dash mini waffle might be the most popular small kitchen appliance on the planet right now. This mini waffle iron makes perfect 4-inch waffles and is affordable and convenient. While you can use a regular waffle maker, almost all keto chaffle recipes you see online are for the Dash Mini Waffle maker, making one 4-inch chaffle at a time. If you don’t want to wait for the Dash Waffle Maker, check out the best mini waffle makers for chaffles.
Most recipes you find for Chaffles, whether sweet or savory, make two four-inch chaffles.
This waffle maker may be a better choice if you have a big family like me. For convenience’s sake, you can make four 3-inch chaffles at once.
Where Can I buy the Dash Mini Waffle Maker?
Amazon has Dash mini waffle makers available in various colors. Of course, you could look for one in stores such as TJMaxx, Kohl’s, Target, or Walmart, but I’ve read that many are sold out.
Can I Use a Regular Waffle Maker?
Sure! You will likely need to adjust the amount of batter you use and the cooking time. Chaffles made on the Dash Mini Maker are usually golden brown in four minutes, but I have read that regular waffle makers can take longer.
How to Serve?
There are several different ways to serve them. I first tested this recipe as a traditional blueberry keto waffle with sugar-free syrup, sugar-free whipped topping, and a side of sausage. BUT my personal favorite is with a scoop of sugar-free, low-carb vanilla ice cream.
Storage and Reheating Instructions
- Storing: You should let chaffles cool completely after cooking, about 10 minutes. Place chaffles in a sealable container or zip-top bag and store them in the fridge for 3-5 days. To freeze, wrap airtight and keep in freezer for 2-3 months.
- Reheating: Preheat oven to 300°F. Place chaffles on a small baking sheet and warm for 8-10 minutes. Heat frozen or refrigerated chaffles in a toaster oven for 2-3 minutes until hot and crispy.
Recipe Variations and Substitutions:
- Lemon Blueberry Chaffles: Another fun variation is to add a little lemon zest to your batter. I’ve found that just a teaspoon of lemon zest can really brighten up the flavors and add a nice tang to the chaffles.
- Cream Cheese Glaze: Simply whip together 2 TB of room-temperature cream cheese, powdered erythritol or monk fruit sweetener to taste, and a splash of heavy cream until smooth.
- Mixed Berry Chaffles: For those days when you’re craving something a little different, mix things up by using a combination of berries. I love doing a mix of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
- Skillet Method: You can easily make chaffles in a greased skillet over medium heat! Just pour your batter into the skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides. It might not have those classic waffle ridges, but it’ll still taste amazing.

Mouthwatering Blueberry Chaffles
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 tbsp blueberries
- 1 tsp cream cheese
- 1 tsp coconut flour
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 squirts liquid Pyure Sweetener (can sub 3/4 tsp or another sweetener such as Monkfruit powdered)
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat the waffle maker and let it heat up for 2-3 minutes. Lightly grease the waffle maker by spraying or brushing the top and bottom plates with cooking spray or oil.
- Crack an egg into a mixing bowl, and add shredded mozzarella cheese, cream cheese, coconut flour, baking powder, vanilla, liquid sweetener, cinnamon, and salt. Mix thoroughly.
- Pour enough batter into the waffle maker to cover the bottom plate evenly. Top batter with a few blueberries, and carefully close the top plate. Cook for 4 minutes, until crisp.
- Remove the chaffle carefully, and repeat the process. Serve hot chaffles alone or with sugar-free maple syrup or keto ice cream.
Notes
- Use room temperature ingredients: Take eggs, cream cheese, and butter out of the fridge 30 minutes before starting so they can be incorporated more easily into the batter.
- Mix batter very well: To prevent uneven texture, vigorously whisk or beat ingredients for at least 60 seconds for a smooth, lump-free consistency.
- Don't overfill the waffle iron: Put just enough batter to cover the bottom plate with a thin, even layer. Overfilling can cause them to overflow or take too long to cook.
- Use cooking spray liberally: Give the hot plates a heavy coating before each batch, or the chaffles may stick. Brush on more oil if needed between batches.
- Resist peeking while cooking: It's tempting, but don't lift the lid, or you'll allow heat to escape. Opening too soon may prevent crispiness.
- Check at 4 minutes: Timer alerts can vary; physically check on chaffles at the 4-minute mark by opening the iron for 1-2 seconds to gauge doneness.
I don’t have a waffle maker, can I do this in pancake fashion?
I’ve only fixed this with a waffle maker. You can try.
Can’t wait to try these but I want to let you know the Lakanto syrup (which I also use) has changed their recipe (from what one of the admins on a fb group I belong to says) and its no longer keto friendly. I don’t know what changed but the one I have has vegetable fiber, vegetable glycerin and cellulose gum. Not sure if these are the changes or not but they don’t seem to be keto friendly anyway.
I just don’t seem to get these waffles right. I have a taste that is off a bit. Not sure what it is.
Without seeing you fix them, it’s hard for me to say. Sorry.
I think you just have to realize that these kinds of things taste different from their high carb counterparts. Once you can learn to appreciate them for what they are, it makes it better!
Having a hard time finding this one on the MyFitnessPal app. When I add the recipe, the calories don’t match yours. I have been able to find some of your other chaffles on there, is this one under a different name?
Hi Denice, I doubt all my recipes are in MyFitnessPal. I don’t personally add them as I don’t use the app and I provide the information in the recipe card. Other app users are who contribute that information. I tried a few in the beginning but it is just too much extra work and there are so many different apps people use.
Made these this morning. I followed the recipe exactly except that I doubled it
They are absolutely delicious. I’ve struggled with Chaffles in the past. No more I’m on board with all your recipes
Fantastic! I’m so glad you loved it.
Hi what flour can I use if I don’t have coconut flour? I have almond flour
Yes, you can almond flour but you would need more than coconut flour. I would use 1 TB almond flour.
My husband and I love this recipe. I multiplied the ingredients x 4 so we each have one more breakfast. I didn’t measure the blueberries. I put 7 blueberries on top of each Chaffle before cooking it. I used ~3 Tablespoons of batter per Chaffle. Thank you Kasey for a great recipe!
Awesome! SO glad you both loved it.
I made these this morning using 1 Tbsp. almond flour and 1 tsp. powdered Swerve. Topped them with sugar free blueberry syrup and a bit of whipped cream – absolutely delicious! I’ll be adding this recipe into rotation for breakfast often.
Sounds so good! I’m so glad you loved it!
These were good! Added 1Tbsp of coconut flour though. Originally they seemed too “cheesy” & thin. Definitely kept me on track when craving BB-pancakes! ❤
So happy you enjoyed it! Sometimes it’s hard to find a low-carb keto friendly option when a craving hits. Super glad this one helped.
I’m confused, does one recipe make 2 chaffles? Is 1 serving 1 chaffle or 2? Thank you, I’m anxious to try this recipe.
Hey Sandra, the recipe makes 2 chaffles which is 1 serving. Hope this helps. Let me know what you think!
