How to make homemade keto taco seasoning

Wow! I had no idea that packaged taco seasoning could have SO MANY CARBS! (Although I’d still use it in a pinch as I do have to choose my battles.) This homemade taco seasoning recipe is keto-friendly/low carb and sugar-free and made with NO FILLERS! If you make this in bulk, it is equivalent to 6-9 taco seasoning packets depending if you use 2 or 3 tablespoons each time.

The best part about homemade taco seasoning is that you’ll know EXACTLY what is in it -and what’s not helping you stick to your keto diet. Plus, it has fewer carbs than taco seasoning packets while being cheaper in the long run.

Is Taco Seasoning Keto Friendly?

I use this homemade keto taco seasoning in many of my recipes, like in my Keto Taco Salad and these Keto Low Carb Taco Cups. With that said, store-bought taco seasoning packets are NOT 100% keto-friendly. They often contain ingredients that those following a keto lifestyle avoid, such as starches, canola oil, sugar, maltodextrin, fillers, and preservatives! Eeek!

This keto-friendly taco mix is very low in carbs and can be made in bulk for a cheaper alternative to those packet mixes. It takes just a few minutes to make it in bulk. I often triple or quadruple the recipe so that it lasts a long time, making it just as convenient as the taco seasoning packets you buy at the store like Old El Paso or McCormick. This mix is also, of course, gluten-free.

How To Make Your Own “DIY Taco Seasoning”

Even if you aren’t a “seasoned” cook (ha, pun intended), making homemade spices is super easy! You simply layer the spices from the recipe card below in some kind of container, then mix it all up so that the spices are combined. Then, you’ll have your very own homemade keto-friendly taco seasoning easily accessible in your spice cabinet for months!

Did you know that making your spice mixes are not only healthier but also cheaper? Plus, spices last for months, so making this taco seasoning in bulk is a no-brainer, especially if you are always making taco-inspired keto meals as we do!

What Is In Keto Taco Seasoning?

Taco seasoning is made up of a few Mexican spices in addition to salt and pepper. It is bold, a little spicy, and full of flavor!

Taco seasoning ingredients:

  • chili powder
  • ground cumin
  • paprika or smoked paprika
  • onion powder
  • dried minced onion
  • garlic powder
  • coriander
  • dried oregano
  • red pepper flakes
  • pink salt
  • black pepper (or cayenne if you like it hot)

This DIY taco seasoning is very versatile, so the ratios are easily “tweakable” if you like your spice blends spicier or with less salt.

Once all of the spices are combined, you can use it as you normally would use a store-bought packet of taco seasoning. Each packet contains about 2-3 tablespoons of seasoning, so if a recipe calls for one packet, you can simply use more or less as you wish for each pound of ground beef. It also works great with chicken.

How to store your taco seasoning

Store your homemade keto taco seasoning in a cool, dry place along with your other spices. A great idea is to use old spice containers! Next time you use up all of your oregano or garlic powder, don’t toss out the container. Instead, clean it out and add in your taco seasoning instead! Just make sure to allow the inside of your container to dry completely, or the spices will stick to the inside.

Use a permanent marker or a piece of paper and some tape to label your taco seasoning bottle. Or, if you have them, a cute little mason jar works for spice storage too! Spices are best used within three months, but they do not technically ever go “bad.” They will just lose some potency after then.

  1. Do you also add 2/3 cup water to hamburger and your spice mix like you do for the store-bought packet?

  2. Kasey, this is awesome! Being in New Mexico, the chili powder was Hatch and the oregano Mexican, and this is as close to authentic as this gringa grandma will probably ever make (though not as hot ?). You’re definitely a blessing. Merry Christmas and blessings to all

  3. I have everything but the coriander on hand but was hoping to make this right now. Could I just leave it out, or can you recommend a substitute? Is it a major part of the flavor profile, or just a supporting note? This looks delicious and I’ll definitely try it as written when I’m not in a to me pinch!

    1. I’ve never tried making it without coriander but you could try subbing cumin. Not sure if it would change the taste.

I’ve made alot of Taco seasoning & this has been my favorite HANDS DOWN! I beyond love it! You need to just go ahead & click on her “The Very Best Taco Meat” link & fix it because you WON’T be disappointed! We LOVED both!!

    1. The taco seasoning is made with other spices and seasonings so you store it in an air-tight container just like you would store other seasoning.

Wonderful- we love taco recipes, so I doubled it and put it in an airtight container. It’s a very good shortcut to have a bunch of this on hand! This is the only recipe for taco seasoning I use!

Hi! Love your taco queso soup. Just made this recipe to add to it. And I put in the whole mixture, as your soup doesn’t specify! I had the salt sweats, lol!! I was wondering what the hell was wrong. I’ll be throwing the soup away and trying again lol… you should specify on the taco soup recipe 👍

    1. Oh no! Yeah, that is a lot of seasoning for 1 recipe! The taco seasoning recipe makes the equivalent of about 6-9 packs of store-bought seasoning, so I bet you had some kind of sweats!! Lol! The first paragraph of the recipe specifies that 2-3 tablespoons of the seasoning equal 1 pack of store-bought seasoning.
